UN in Myanmar Statement

• Today in observing International Labour Day, the ILO Representative for Myanmar, Mr Donglin Li, called for COVID-19 responses to respect workers’ rights and promote social justice. The first day of May is observed globally each year to promote workers’ rights. 

Paletwa, Myanmar – Emergency food supplies from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have successfully reached communities stranded for months in Paletwa on Saturday. Some 3,700 conflict-affected people will receive food assistance from WFP starting from today.

As international commercial flights remain temporarily suspended as part of the measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19, the World Food Programme (WFP), on behalf of the United Nations in Myanmar, is launching a series of humanitarian/development flights linking Yangon and Kuala Lumpur to bring in cargo and personnel.

• The UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), today agreed with the Government of the Union of Myanmar to extend the tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for activities in Rakhine State.

• Ensuring the protection of healthcare workers, volunteers and individuals is one of the main priorities for the Government of Myanmar in its efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19. The United Nations in Myanmar and its partners are supporting efforts to prioritise the safety of frontline healthcare workers.
