International Day of Forests 2025: Forests and foods - nurture the forest to nourish the people
21 March 2025
Forests have an important role to play in food security, nutrition and livelihoods. Forest foods offer essential nutrients that sustain millions of people, especially for those living near forests.
From fruits, nuts and honey to edible insects and mushrooms, forests are nature’s supermarkets.
Healthy forests are also home to the pollinators that help crops thrive. By enriching soils, providing clean water and balancing the climate, forests sustain agriculture, which puts food on our tables. They are essential for the survival of forest-dependent communities, particularly Indigenous Peoples, and contribute to climate change mitigation by storing carbon.
