Press Release

UN staff member in Myanmar tests positive for COVID - 19

28 March 2020

  • On 27  March 2020, a United Nations international staff member working in Myanmar tested positive with COVID-19 after coming back from Switzerland.

The staff member had been in self-quarantine since the return as a precaution.  As the staff member began to experience symptoms consistent with Covid-19, the staff member was taken to and isolated in a designated public hospital where the test was taken.  The United Nations expresses its deepest appreciation to the Government of Myanmar for its support and to the hospital staff for the warm and professional care they are extending towards our colleague, who we hope will soon be on the path to full recovery.

The United Nations is fully committed to supporting national efforts to prevent the spread of the virus in Myanmar and to strengthening the national capacity to manage cases as they occur, as well as the broader impact of COVID-19.  In these challenging times, we continue our work as a partner to Myanmar in humanitarian action, development assistance and peacebuilding unabated. End.
