Today, we celebrate the 76th anniversary of the United Nations, an organization that came into being after two devastating world wars.
The world may have changed since 1945, but there is still hunger, poverty, conflict and inequality across the world.
The foundational pillars of the United Nations: recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family as the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world; respect for justice, rule of law and the obligations arising from international law; and the promotion of social progress and better living standards, remain as valid as ever as a collective framework to address the challenges of today’s world including the multiple challenges faced by Myanmar
Myanmar today is confronted by a range of compounding crises that threaten to reverse important development and peace gains accrued over decades. In this time of crises, I once again pledge to you the commitment of the United Nations Country Team to stay here on the ground and deliver for the benefit of the people of Myanmar. Our job as Agencies, Funds and Programmes based in the country, is to work with partners across Myanmar to address challenges such as increasing humanitarian needs and the COVID-19 pandemic, protection and promotion of human rights, peace and sustainable development.
The work of the United Nations in Myanmar is made possible by the dedication of our staff and our implementing partners, all of whom remain crucial in delivering our programmes and humanitarian assistance across the country. I would like to express my deep appreciation to each one of them, particularly our national colleagues, for upholding the mandate of the United Nations tirelessly, even under these extremely difficult circumstances so that we can stand by the people of Myanmar and continue to reach and support you in this time of need.
Thank you.
