• UN human rights experts said the rejection by Myanmar’s Supreme Court of a final appeal by two jailed Reuters journalists was a grave injustice, and represented a dark day for media freedoms and democracy in the country.

The Secretary-General is following with great concern recent developments in Myanmar.

"The Security Council, recalling its Press Statement SC/14430 of 4 February 2021, reiterates its deep concern at developments in Myanmar following the declaration of the state of emergency imposed by the military on 1 February and the arbitrary detention of members of the Government, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint and others. The Security Council reiterates its call for their immediate release.

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the continuing brutal violence by the military in Myanmar.  

GENEVA  – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on Tuesday urged States to take immediate, decisive and impactful measures to push Myanmar’s military leadership into halting its campaign of repression and slaughter of its people.
