Myanmar Situation Report #2: UNFPA Mobilizes Life-Saving Services Following Myanmar Earthquake

The earthquake that struck Myanmar on 28 March has caused widespread devastation, affecting over 17 million people across 57 townships. More than 3,000 lives have been lost, with thousands more injured or missing. Entire communities have been displaced, with many sheltering in schools, stadiums, and open spaces under increasingly difficult conditions. Critical infrastructure—including hospitals, roads, and water systems—has been severely damaged, limiting access to essential services. Women and girls are among the most vulnerable, facing heightened protection risks, limited access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, and increased exposure to gender-based violence (GBV). As the crisis unfolds, Myanmar’s health system remains overwhelmed, food insecurity is deepening, and mental health needs are escalating.

UNFPA is leading efforts to meet the urgent health and protection needs of women and girls in the hardest-hit areas. Emergency SRH services are being delivered through mobile and static clinics in Mandalay and Sagaing, reaching thousands, including pregnant women and adolescent girls. Distributions of dignity kits, clean delivery kits, and Women Essential Items are underway, alongside GBV referral services and MHPSS support. UNFPA is also coordinating with partners through interagency mechanisms and leading GBV sub-cluster efforts to ensure a harmonized response. As humanitarian needs continue to escalate, UNFPA is working to scale up its operations and ensure that the unique needs of women and girls are prioritized in the response.
