WFP launches emergency logistics service to support Myanmar flood response

YANGON, Myanmar – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has activated a free-to-user emergency cargo transport service to bolster the humanitarian response to severe flooding in Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady Region. By making its logistics capacity available to all humanitarian partners, WFP is accelerating the delivery of life-saving relief to flood-impacted communities.

The logistics service is initially focusing on the heavily flood affected areas of Lemyethna, Yegyi, and Ngathaingchaung, with plans to expand to other locations based on needs.

"When floodwaters isolate entire communities, logistics becomes the difference between success and failure of an operation," said Michael Dunford, WFP Representative and Country Director in Myanmar. "Beyond delivering our own food assistance, WFP is serving as the logistics provider for the wider humanitarian response. By opening our transport lines to our partners, we can collectively ensure that food, medicine, and shelter materials swiftly and safely reach those who need them most."

The fleet is now available for all eligible humanitarian cargo from responding organizations. This includes food and nutrition assistance, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) supplies, medicines, and emergency shelter materials. WFP will operate the service for an initial period of two weeks which may be extended if transport bottlenecks and humanitarian needs persist.

Meanwhile, WFP has also launched an emergency food response in Sagaing Region, alongside its ongoing relief efforts in Ayeyarwady Region. To date, WFP has reached 15,000 affected people with emergency food rations across both regions.
